“But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day” (2nd Peter 3:8)
“But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day” (2nd Peter 3:8)
God exists outside of and beyond time, yet His Creation is fixed within it. From the moment Creation was set in motion, time began. Thus, we live and count our time on earth from “sunset to sunset” and from “year to year,” able to look back upon recorded history, as well as an uncertain future.
When our Lord promised to return, many thought this event would be imminent, within their lifetime. And although Christ never gave specifics, as time passed, those early [persecuted] Christians began to wonder at the delay.
Therefore, Peter reminds them not to lose heart, that God’s promise is a promise, but not to look at them through the lens of human time. God will come, but in “His time,” when the time is right in His eyes. And if His plan takes thousands of years to unfold, it makes no difference because to Him it is but a “day.”
Fr. John
