The Mystery of the Mother of God · Fr. Stephen Freeman

The 15th of August is the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God (her death). Orthodox Christians fast for two weeks prior to this great feast and celebrate it with great solemnity. A question was recently placed by a reader about the “perpetual virginity” of Mary. I am offering this small post to address that question and to look at the place of the Most Holy Theotokos in Orthodox faith and life.

I am always hesitant to write about the mystery of the Mother of God. There are few things within the Orthodox Church that are held more dearly while at the same time being misunderstood and occasionally vilified by those outside the Church.  Originally these doctrines and devotions were not part of the most common kerygma (public preaching of the Church). Mark and John have no narratives of the birth of Christ (even though John contains some of  the most deeply significant material with regard to the Mother of God). St. Paul seems to have but a single reference to Mary (Galatians 4:4).

The early Church made a clear distinction between its kerygma (public preaching) and those things which were held as mysteries. The mysteries were largely unspoken – though accepted as true and embodied in the life, prayer and liturgy of the Church. The reason for the mysteries as mysteries were varied. In some cases, certain teachings were held quietly lest they cause too much of a scandal in the preaching of the gospel. In other cases, some teachings were unspoken because they were very hard to speak – they were beyond words. Among these latter teachings would be the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. While absolutely foundational to the Christian faith, this teaching was implied frequently throughout the writings of the New Testament, but never declared in a forthright and definitive manner until the 4th century. Orthodoxy holds that the doctrine was not the product of development nor of evolution, but was known from the beginning, even if the language in which it was expressed was as yet unknown. The Church could not have recognized Arianism as a heresy had it not already known the truth as found in Orthodoxy, nor could it have recognized the truth as spoken in the Nicene Creed and by saints such as Athanasius had the truth not already and always been known.

Having said this, I offer some cautious observations on the Orthodox dogmas and devotional understandings concerning the Mother of God. A question was posted earlier today on the Orthodox doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary and the problems raised by Matthew 1:25 “[and Joseph] did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn child.”

The doctrine of Mary’s perpetual virginity (that she remained a virgin throughout her life), interestingly, was almost universal in its acceptance within the early Church, and was defended even by John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli, and Martin Luther. The key word [heos] in Matthew 1:25 is generally translated as “until” in English – which many modern readers take to mean that “after she brought forth her firstborn child she had relations with Joseph.” However, the same Greek word is used in Matthew 22:44 “Sit Thou at my right hand until I make thine enemies Thy footstool.” There it clearly does not mean that Christ will cease to be at His father’s right hand after His enemies are defeated. The word has the clear sense that Mary had no relations with Joseph before the child was born (the issue in the passage is His virginal conception) and is consistent with the Church’s belief that she had no relations with Joseph at any time thereafter.

That Mary remained a virgin for her entire life, as noted above, was a generally accepted teaching of the Church, found in the writings of the fathers, and consistently proclaimed in the liturgical and iconographic life of the Church.

The liturgical life of the Church makes frequent use of Old Testament images as prefiguring Christ’s virginal conception and birth. The bush which is on fire and yet not burned is a frequent image of Mary. The passing through the Red Sea on dry foot is another such image; Aaron’s rod that budded; the fleece of Gideon, etc. Indeed, the space needed to list all of the Old Testament images used as such prefigurements exceed the space I generally use for a posting.

The sense of all these images is of God being born into the world without a human father. The barrenness of Mary’s virginity is the human counterpart of the fruitfulness of God. God’s strength is made perfect in weakness. The manner of her  birthgiving is synonymous with the manner of our own salvation. It is the work of God from Whom life alone can come. Our role is like her role, “Be it unto me according to Thy word.”

That Mary remained a virgin both before, during and after the birth of Christ is the common understanding of the Orthodox fathers and of the liturgical and iconographic life of the Church. The Theotokos is always presented with three stars on her veil in her icons. They represent her virginity “before, during, and after the birth of Christ.”

There is also a “common sense” argument for Mary’s perpetual virginity (or so it has always seemed to me). Joseph understood what was to take place within Mary according to the witness of Scripture. It strains every Biblical understanding of piety to believe that Joseph having such knowledge would then take Mary into the common practices of marriage. The Orthodox tradition is that the “brothers and sisters” of Christ mentioned in Scripture are children of Joseph by an earlier marriage.

Orthodoxy does not, and will not accept modern language such as co-redemptorix, put forward by some zealous Roman Catholics: Christ alone is our redemption. But neither can we tell the story of redemption without reference to her. She is indeed, our most holy, most pure, most glorious and ever-blessed, Lady Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary.  This is a great mystery. May God make it known to all His children!

Western devotions to Mary have forms that differ from Orthodox practices, and I’m not at all sure that the Western, Catholic understanding is the same (I’ll admit that I don’t know). My Anglican use of the rosary and devotion to Mary, which largely followed Catholic practice, certainly made my conversion to Orthodoxy ever so much easier. Indeed, her presence in the text of an Orthodox service far exceeds anything you’ll ever see in Rome.

The Orthodox veneration of the Mother of God is grounded in its understanding of salvation. As such, the veneration of Mary is an expression of the most foundational doctrine of the faith. This is generally misunderstood by the non-Orthodox for the simple reason that they do not understand salvation itself. Salvation is about a union or communion with God. It is a participation in the very life of God. We were created for this communion, breathed into us in the act of our creation. Through sin, we have broken that communion and become subject to death and disintegration.

Christ, in becoming a human being, united Himself to our human nature. He suffered death and was buried. But in His death, because He is also God, He tramples down death and rises from the tomb. Our human nature is raised with Him. When we are Baptized, the Scriptures say we are Baptized “into His death and raised in the likeness of His resurrection.” In Holy Communion, we eat His very Body and drink His Blood, a true communion and participation in His life.

When this fundamental doctrine is understood, Mary’s role in history and her place in the Church become clear. Christ does not enter her womb as though it were a borrowed space. The Creed says, “He took flesh of the Virgin Mary.” Christ’s humanity is not a separate creation, but “bone of her bone, and flesh of her flesh.” She is truly His mother.

The Scriptures recognize this in various ways. In particular, when Mary brings the Christ Child to the Temple on the 40th day, the Prophet Simeon prophesies the coming sufferings of Christ and adds, “…and a sword will pierce your soul as well.” This is far more than saying, “It will make you unhappy.” In Christ’s suffering on the Cross, Mary suffers as well. This is because of the peculiar union that was their relationship from the beginning.

Christians describe the life of salvation as “beholding Christ face to face.” Mary would have done this quite literally numerous times a day for nearly three years as she nursed Him. In St. John’s gospel, at the Wedding in Cana, there is a level of communication between mother and Son that transcends words.

At the wedding feast, she comes to her Son and says, “They have no wine.” She does not ask Him anything. His response is frequently misinterpreted. He says, in the Greek: “Tί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί,” (Jn. 2:4). (“What is this to me and you?”) It is a very strange phrase in the Greek, but is a direct quote from the widow of Zarephath when she is speaking to Elijah about the death of her son (1 Kings 17:18). Christ is warning His mother that “it is not my time.” But, if He acts in helping with this wedding and its wine, it will set in motion something that cannot be stopped – His kairos – His time. And when His time comes, she will be like the widow of Zarephath, a widow whose son is dead. All of this is contained in this tiny conversation of but a few words.

Her response is equally terse, “Do whatever He tells you.” This is similar to her first words to the angel, “Let it be to me according to your word.” She is ready for what will take place, including its most fearful consequences.

But all of this can only be rightly understood if we remember the nature of the union between mother and Son. It is also a union that will be our own salvation. Christ has become what we are by nature, that we might become what he is by grace. This is the great “exchange.”

Orthodox prayer gives expression to this communion. St. Paul says that the Holy Spirit prays within us saying, “Abba, Father” (Gal. 4:6). Those words are the words of the Son (the one says, “Abba”). We do not pray as strangers, but as members of the household, now emboldened to speak with the very voice of the Son of God. It is this same voice that speaks of Mary as “Mother,” and gives her honor. That honor, or veneration, is the expression of love. Just as she loves Him, so she loves us.

In my experience, devotion to the Mother of God comes very slowly for converts to the faith. Five hundred years of Protestant thought have created a Christianity in which Mary has little place other than on Christmas cards and in badly produced movies. English translations of the Scriptures often butcher Marian passages conveying false images.

The Wedding at Cana passage cited above is frequently rendered: “What do I have to do with you, woman?” which is simply inaccurate. It gives the impression of disrespect, as though Mary were being a bother to her Son. What is deeply lacking is the spiritual consciousness rooted in salvation through union with Christ. None of the doctrines expressed in the Great Seven Ecumenical Councils make any sense apart from that awareness. Put simply, it is how both the Scriptures and the early Fathers understand our salvation. Union (communion, participation) is the fundamental grammar of Christian teaching.

When this grammar is properly grasped, it becomes clear that we cannot speak of Christ apart from Mary (nor Mary apart from Christ). By the same token, we cannot speak of Christ apart from the Church, nor the Church apart from Christ. We are told in 1 Cor. 12:21 that the “head cannot say to the feet, ‘I have no need of you,” and this in the very passage in which we are told that Christ is the “head of the body (the Church).” We cannot speak of one member of the Body apart from all the others, for the life of each is the life of all and the life of all is the life of each.

In our devotional life, this is expressed in the communion of saints, our prayers that gather all together in union with Christ:

Commemorating our most holy, most pure, most blessed lady, Theotokos, and ever-virgin Mary, and all the saints, let us commend ourselves and each other, and all our life unto Christ our God.”

On the personal level, the experience of the Church has taught us private devotions as well. Within those, we begin to discover the mystical bonds that only such devotions reveal. Years ago, in a reference I have long since forgotten, I read a quote in which St. Seraphim of Sarov said, “There are things about Jesus you cannot know until His mother tells them to you.”

This part of the Orthodox life is difficult to describe. It is a perception of Christ, though with a greater fullness, one that extends into the persons of the saints. In Mary, that person encompasses an intimacy with Christ that is without equal. In my own experience, this intimacy includes the depths of her maternal love, for her Son, and for all creation.

Faith is not ours…

There are certain things man has to do. If he doesn’t do them, no matter how insistently he may be asking for grace, God won’t give it to him. And man has to lay his confidence in God and have faith in his heart. Because everything is given to man according to his measure of faith assigned by God.

Faith is most certainly a gift of God. Yet, this gift is given according to  man’s overall attitude. God doesn’t do favours selectively. He doesn’t give to some and refuse the others. God doesn’t do such things; He isn’t partial.

God loves all and wants everybody to be saved. Man’s dishonest attitude and disposition is what prevents God from giving us the gift called faith. And, then, it prevents Him from granting us His grace according to the measure of our faith.

 Archimandrite Symeon Kragiopoulos (†)

And The Lord will comfort you..

Why can’t we come to an understanding with God? Because it’s not enough to simply hear the truth of God. It takes courage and willingness to accept whatever the truth of God has to say to you. It takes courage and willingness to accept whatever the truth of God wants to bring to your soul. And you should practically apply the truth of God in your life.

It will take a lot of time and a lot of learning and suffering for the soul to be introduced to the mystery of salvation, to be reborn, to be as Christ wants it to be, to be made as He wants it made.

It is part of the divine economy when a soul is alone in the world, without any support. It makes the soul trust in God more intensely, run to God more willingly, pray more fervently.

This way, even when the most negative thing happens to us, it can be seen as a positive one.

Saying of Saint Paisios From the book “From the Ascetic and Hesycastic Athonite Tradition”

The grace of God envelops t person who is humble and everyone wants to be close to him. If we want to have God’s grace we must rid ourselves of selfishness, pride, jealousy, and vanity. Humility is the key to cleaning ourselves of all these bad qualities. And for us to achieve humility we need to obey our spiritual father, and cut off our own will.

ANTHONY BLOOM:

Γιατί μας έχεις, εμάς τους ανθρώπους, τόση μεγάλη μανία και μας πολεμείς με τόσο θυμό;

All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. (John 1:3)

All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. (John 1:3)

Who is Christ? We hear one, two thousand different opinions. One person says he is a philosopher, another that he is a sociologist, and yet another that he is a poet. Others say still other things. Today’s Gospel reading gives us the correct answer: it says that Christ is God. You believe this? Then you are a Christian. You don’t believe this? Then you are not. You may well belong to one school of philosophy or another, but you are not a Christian!

Christ is God, then. He is not just a man; he is the God-man Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified and who is God. In this passage, we hear that there was never a time when the Son and Word of God did not exist. There was indeed a time when man did not exist – science even concedes this – but there was never a time when Christ, the second person of the Triune God, did not exist. The Holy Trinity; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Three suns in one sun; three-sunned Divinity. All Holy Trinity, have mercy on your world!

Further on, the Gospel says that Jesus Christ, the second person of the Holy Trinity, is he through whom all things were made – all things both seen and unseen. “All things,” it says, “were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.” (John 1:3). This requires analysis.

These God-inspired words speak of the world’s ontology, of the creation of things in other words. One of humanity’s ten greatest spiritual men, Blessed Augustine (whose name I unworthily bear), says that all the created things around us, from those we see through a telescope to those which may only be seen through a microscope, belong to the following four categories.

To the first category belong those things which are endowed with ‘being’ and being alone. In other words, they simply exist. What are these? They are the dust of the earth, the water, stones, the hills, priceless and useless metals, minerals, but also the heavenly bodies – the stars and even the galaxies.

To the second category belong those things which have something beyond being: they grow. What are these? They are the plants and the trees. Beyond existence, these things grow. Where does a tree begin? As a small seed. This seed then falls to the earth and grows. It is watered and it grows. It sprouts; it grows and develops, becoming a great tree.

On to the third category. According to Blessed Augustine, those things which belong to this category have something beyond existence and growth: they feel. Which things are these? These are the animals. A cute little lamb, for example, exists, grows and feels. It feels pain. O how it suffers these very days at the hands of men who slaughter it for their Paschal feast! Animals feel. Some of them even have senses which are stronger than those of other beings. The eagle, for example, has a sharp eye, he has crystal-clear vision, or what we call an ‘eagle-eye’, which allows him to soar as high as the sun and yet from this height he is able to discern the most miniscule thing on the earth below. The dog has both a very keen sense of smell and excellent hearing. I have read somewhere that in London the police have special dogs, as well as officers equipped with whistles which, when blown, cannot be heard by man. Only the dogs can hear these whistles. When the dogs hear these whistles they run immediately to find the officer calling them. The dog is also the first animal to sense an earthquake; he senses it even before the seismograph.

In summary; rocks have ‘being’, they just ‘are’; the trees both ‘are’ and ‘grow’; the animals ‘are’, ‘grow’ and ‘feel’. And now we have arrived at the peak of the ladder of beings; we have arrived at man. Man is matter, he is earth – we do not deny it! – and thus he has ‘being’. He grows, since from an embryo, from a little child, he grows into a full-grown man. He also feels, for he too experiences pain. He does not have these things alone, however; he also has something beyond these. What does he have beyond these? It is that he thinks; he has a mind. O, the human mind! Let them say, let them shout, that man comes from the ape, from the orangutan! This is a grave error. What separates us from the animals is the ability to think. The mind is a great thing. Next to it, the computer is nothing. The computer is nothing – a toy – next to that incomprehensible piece of equipment which we call the human intellect. It is this which separates us from all other beings. It is by means of the intellect that man understands, that he plans, that he invents, that he creates. Take an ape. Put him in school for ten years. He will not learn the alphabet; he will only grunt! From the time he is a young student, man grows in knowledge, eventually becoming a wise researcher or inventor. He is capable of progress on account of his intellect.
There are, then, four categories of beings. First, those things that ‘are’; second those things that ‘are’ and ‘grow’; third, those things that ‘are’, ‘grow’ and ‘feel’; and fourth, those things that ‘think’. Have we finished with the ladder of beings, I wonder? No! Because there exist not only those being that we see, but also those we cannot see. Those things that we see are few in comparison with those we cannot see. Beyond the world we see is found the invisible world which is infinite and wondrous. It is in this world that the bodiless hosts, the heavenly powers, the angels and archangels, are found, as well as the souls of men which have passed from the earth, and the demons who of their own will fell away from the aim for which they were created.

My brothers, this is the pyramid of beings, “of all things visible and invisible,” and at the peak of this pyramid is the Creator, the Triune God. As the Fathers and teachers of our Church teach, all things are made by the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit. This dogma, this truth of our faith, is affirmed in today’s Gospel which says concerning the Son and Word of the Father: “All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.” The Son and Word of God, who humbled himself and came down to the earth, was incarnate, was crucified, and who arose from the dead and whose resurrection we celebrate today, is he, “by whom all things were made”.

All things, everything, from the smallest to the greatest, from the grass which we walk on to the huge trees, from the mite to the elephant, and from the atom to the planets and galaxies which swirl in outer space, all things were made by Christ. Do you believe this? Then you are a Christian. You don’t believe this? That is your right. Christ and the Church do not need followers. I am in favour of a Church of quality, not a Church of quantity. Thousands of faithless people are not worth one faithful Christian. He who believes does not say, “I have my opinion”. What is your opinion, sir? What God says here in the Gospel: “All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.”

To Christ himself, the eternal God – in spite of the atheists and unbelievers of all ages – to him be glory, honour and worship unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Metropolitan Avgoustinos (Kantiotes) of Florina

The Lord takes pity on us..

God doesn’t let us go through whatever gives us a hard time for the sake of us having a hard time. Could that ever be possible since he is the God of Love? He allows hardship to happen for our own good. And whoever is capable of seeing that, he’s already a saint and already in paradise.

***

Here lies the secret. If we look at things from God’s viewpoint, they will look different. A man who is good willing, a man who trusts God, doesn’t find it hard to say: “No matter how things stand, God is merciful, God feels for man, God loves. He doesn’t want to see man in pain or suffering, in misery or torture. If man appears to find himself in such a situation, then something else is the matter.”

***

What we go through in this life come as a direct consequence of the fact that man lives far from God; And God allows all this hardship hoping man will wake up, will come to his senses and return to God. The person, who takes for granted good heartedly that God loves, that He takes pity on man and that He doesn’t want his creation to undergo hardship, will say: “I need to undergo all this suffering and whatever else happens to me. I need all this pain, no matter how deep or how big, and the hardship, too, no matter how big they are. ”

Let’s not regard this as a weird conception: If in such a way we look at things, the pain and misery feel like a blessing, they feel like love, they feel like God’s mercy.

***

When you start to believe in the goodness of God, in your heart then, you feel and confess: “With God letting pain and hardship exist, my heart is all the more cleansed and sanctified. The benefit and blessing would have been a lot less, had God relieved me of the pain and hardship.”

***

It’s no big deal for God to relieve you of whatever you are suffering from. It’s just not to your benefit. If, indeed, you love the truth, if you love God and you want to find yourself on the way to salvation, you will realize that what you are going through lead towards the softening and refinement of your soul. What you are going through lead towards your repenting, becoming more humble, developing real trust and love towards God.

***

There comes a time when you truly realize and experience that God would have taken all the pain and hardship away, if it had been to your benefit. It is though, absolutely essential and beneficial for the pain to remain. That’s why God lets it be.

***

Through faith we can feel that the Lord takes pity on us and says to us: “Hang in there and be brave. The time comes when whatever torments you, will be history”.

And if time has come to hear: “Enough already. You are saved”, so be it.

If this doesn’t happen, it means that this is not the proper time; it means that it’s not to our benefit for this to happen.

Let’s consider a fine point here: The Lord takes pity on us and offers us what he wants and can offer being God as he is. But, he takes special pity on us when we think it’s not our fault that we are suffering –it may actually look like it- , and when we wonder: “Are we to blame? What have we done? Why has this or that tribulation befallen us?” Especially in these cases the Lord has special mercy on us and addresses us with these words: “Don’t cry. This is all for your own good”, and as if by some miracle, God “rises” us from the “dead”.

See to it that you are sincere in your deeds as well as in your words, and especially in confession. For God searches out the hearts and reins,  and nothing remains obscure in the sight of His sleepless eye.
Fear God; God is not mocked;  He is not fooled. He chastises severely when He does not see sincerity; so be careful. When you are disobedient and commit a secret sin, counteract it by openly revealing it in confession. Do not let your ego overcome you and make you hide the truth and remain uncorrected and passionate. Correct everything now if you want to see good days of dispassion and peace.

From the book “From the Ascetic and Hesycastic Athonite Tradition”

To be a Godly person you must have strength and courage inside of you. Those that were shown to be great (heroes, leaders etc.) had a big heart; they were full of valiance.  To be a Godly person means to give all of yourself with total trust to our Lord. If someone tells you something that bothers you, just let it go and think to yourself: “I also make mistakes”. It is valiant to tolerate other peoples’ mistakes. A person who is brave, is someone who also has love, and God appreciates that. Bravery does not mean you are a savage but rather that you are gallant. It means that you have gallantry and not misery.

Like the older tree...

 Like the older tree

If we don’t go often to confession, it is more difficult to remove passions and sins from inside of us. An older and big tree cannot go down with a single hit from our axe. Similarly, a sin that you commit and has taken roots inside of you, cannot be removed with one contrition of our heart, but with many.

Elder Cleopa Ilie

It is impossible

Without water is impossible to wash a dirty piece of clothing, and without tears of repentance is impossible to wash and clean the soul from all its dirtiness and stains.

St. Symeon the New Theologian

Sayings of Saint Paisios

“The devil fell because of his pride. A dreadful thing! He was the chief Angel, and became an enemy of God, and of man. There is no one, however, who should feel hatred, but only empathy– pity for his sorry state.”

***

“Humility, kindness, and simplicity, these are basic things. Kindness means to first think about what is beneficial for the other, not what is beneficial for ourselves. That said, God is not unjust: He subsequently recompenses us for whatever we lose in our efforts to help our brother.”

***

“All those who have enthusiasm and much ego must be in obedience, in order to cut their will.”

***

“Evil has greatly advanced, causing major changes to occur in these past years. There is however a good leaven on which–and because of which–God has mercy also on the whole world. Let’s not lose this leaven, because then we are doomed”.

Τι είναι οι 'άλλοι';

Do you want to see a miracle?

An older monk once told us. Many university students come here to Mount Athos. Once a dozen had come and asked me to perform a miracle for them. They insisted a lot. So, I told them. Well, get in line so I can cut off your heads. Then I will do the miracle by putting them back on! However, make sure you keep distances between you, so I will not be confused and match incorrectly heads and bodies! Are you ready? Do you want to see the miracle? The young people reacted immediately. No, not to us father, they said with one voice!

Eldress Theosemni of Chrysopigi

Let us hymn and glorify God in trials. Let us not be beggars and only ask things from God like: “give me this, give me that, why won’t you give it to me?”

May our lips be used to glorify God. Let us not be sullen and self-absorbed. Let us say also “Glory to Thee, oh God!”

We must never forget it. It should be always on our lips.

 Eldress Theosemni of Chrysopigi

Clean yourself..

A young man asked an Elder in the Holy Mountain: “Elder, how I can see Christ?”

The Elder responded: “To see Christ my child, first you need to clean yourself. If you are expecting a visitor, then you clean your house. If you are expecting a guest, then you clean the room he will stay. The same thing you need to do for Christ, when you want to see Him, when you want Him to come inside you. You need to clean yourself. ”

Saint Ignatius: “…only to enjoy my Christ.”

Saint Ignatius confesses: “Of all things visible and invisible I envy nothing. The only thing I want to gain is Jesus Christ. Fire and crucifixion, assaults of beasts, scattering of the bones, chopping of the flesh, grinding of the whole body, all the ways of satan’ s test, let them come upon me, only to enjoy my Christ”

He says elsewhere: “Like living water there is a voice in me saying: ‘Come to the Father’. I am not satisfied with perishable foods and pleasures.  It’s the bread of God I long for, which is the flesh of Jesus Christ, and it’s His blood I want to receive, which is indestructible love”.

Throughout  the centuries the same thirst  and flame possessed the ascetics and hermits. They lived like strangers and foreigners to this world. At the same time, they suffered the everyday martyrdom of conscience joyfully and willingly so as to deaden themselves and let Christ dwell in them.

Archimandrite Symeon Kragiopoulos (†)

Why do you worry?

Why do you worry?

More often than not man falls prey to worry. As soon as humility comes to his heart, the whole anxiety, the whole agitation, leaves.

Why do you worry? Well, things worked out in such a way, that you were exposed. Because of this exposure, the old man was not “fed”, and you felt in- significant. Either God allowed for things to work out in a way that your nothingness came to light, or the way they treated you totally wiped you out. However, once you humble yourself and say “Let it be blessed, my God; that’s the truth”, there’s no problem, and you are no longer upset or worried. You bring peace to yourself. “I was brought low, and he delivered me,” says the psalmist.

…

This is what repentance means: I confess my guilt, not simply the incident. I am in pain. I am being torn apart but I don’t bear a grudge against God. I act as I do, in great seriousness, without making any excuses for myself.

The world

The world

As someone stops considering the world and connects more intensely with God, the more the Divine Grace engulfs this person and feels God’s help. This individual is blessed by the Lord, who sends His Mercy abundantly which covers this person for the entire life.

Sorrows and Tribulations

God allows sorrows and tribulations so we can get closer to Him. The sorrows must not be avoided, but be invited, so our love towards God is tested.

From the Ascetics by St. Isaak the Syrian

- Τί θέλεις να κάνω;

- Αληθινά, νομίζεις ότι μπορώ να σε σώσω;

Αà€Î¿à„έλεàƒÎ¼Î± εικàŒÎ½Î±à‚ για à„αà†Î¿à‚ Î±Î³Î¹Î¿à… à€Î¿à à†à…à Î¹Î¿à…
