Today's Sermon in a Nutshell:
Today we celebrate the Protection of the Blessed Mother of God (Pokrov), one of the minor feasts of the Orthodox Church. It commemorates a tenth century miracle in which the Theotokos appeared in a vision just as pagan, enemy forces were bearing down upon and ready to attack Constantinople. As the people gathered in churches to pray for their safety, Mary was seen to hold out Her veil over the congregation as a sign of “protection.” Therefore, through Mary’s intercession and the prayers of the faithful, the enemy withdrew without battle.
Ironically, even though this event occurred in what is modern-day Turkey, it is little celebrated by the Greeks and Antiochian Churches; however, it is especially beloved and fervently venerated by the Slavic people.
Regardless of this fact, the Virgin Mary’s protective veil continues to be a visible sign and symbol of Her motherly love and intercession for all faithful at the Throne of Her Son, our Lord and Savior, even in the midst of the most difficult and trying times.
O Most Holy Theotokos, pray unto God for us!
Fr. John
