Today we commemorate another of the twelve minor
prophets, the Holy Prophet Zephaniah. He spoke out boldly against religious and
moral corruption stating that, “the great day of the Lord is near; near and
hastening fast” (Zeph. 1:14), encouraging everyone to mend their ways and make
themselves right with God immediately. He also went on to describe various
punishments that will be meted out against those who half-heartedly practice
their faith, reminding me of what the great football coach Vince Lombardi once
said: “If you are not fired with enthusiasm, you will be fired with
enthusiasm.”
