Today's Sermon in a Nutshell:
This morning’s gospel about the rich young man who comes to Christ seeking salvation is recorded by Matthew, Mark, and Luke. And although they differ slightly (as would anyone who witnesses an event and then writes down what happened), the outcome is always the same: the young man goes away sorrowful because he doesn’t like what Christ asked of him.
This is a problem that becomes more and more acute as we get further from the time of Christ. As the world changes, man often wants the gospel to Christ to change, so as to “keep up with the times,” to be “relevant;” sometimes even claiming it’s more important to change or bend the gospels to keep people in the Church.
Sadly, such people miss the point. Christ came to bring us the Truth, and the truth cannot be altered. His Commandments, Teachings, and Law are what makes the Church the Church. We encourage all, accept all, and desire all to come to the knowledge of the Truth. We cannot rightfully re-write Holy Scripture or change Christ’s teachings to fit our philosophies, fads, or mindset. Either one adheres to and follows Christ or doesn’t.
Fr. John
