“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs and pass by justice and the love of God.” (Luke 11:42)

“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs and pass by justice and the love of God.” (Luke 11:42)

Jesus chastises the Pharisees for going to the extreme level of tithing even their mint and rue (giving a tenth of their herbs to God), while overlooking more critical spiritual values like justice and love for God. This phrase exemplifies the tendency to adhere strictly to minor religious practices at the expense of significant moral principles.

Fr. John
