St Ninian's Cave in Galloway, Scotland - a raw and unedited gift for you all, our friends and benefactors, on St Ninian's Feast Day.
I filmed this at the entry into the cave sometime in May, this year. Although a bishop,
St Ninian's vocation was that of a hermit, and he used this small cave on the coast of the Atlantic for personal prayer in solitude and silence.
His Monastery in Whithorn (the 'White House') is the first to be built in Scotland. Founded in 397, it is contemporary with the first monastic settlements of the Desert Fathers in Egypt.
St Ninian is one of our main protectors. Our Monastery chapel - Kilninian (which literally means 'Church of Ninian') - is built on the foundation of a much earlier monastery, dating back to the 6th or 7th century. The first monks, coming to Mull from Iona, settled at Kilninian precisely to honour St Ninian and the holy well dedicated to him. That well is this here, a few metres away from the church. Those of you who have joined one of our Celtic pilgrimages have had the blessing to see it and be blessed by its waters.
May St Ninian's prayers bless and protect all of us, and may we all live to see his Monastery brought back to live and flourishing again.
