A SHEPHERD TO
LIONS
(Sunday,
December 18)
“Great are the
accomplishments of faith, / for the Three Holy Youths rejoiced in the flames as
though at the waters of rest, / and the prophet Daniel appeared, / a shepherd
to the lions as though they were sheep. / So by their prayers, O Christ God,
save our souls!” (Troparion-hymn, Sunday of the
Forefathers)
On the Sunday
before Christmas we celebrate the Prophet Daniel, among others, as “a shepherd
to lions,” because he famously emerged unharmed from the lions’ den, which the
king had sealed with a large stone (Dan 6: 17).
