Archpriest Alexis Stavrovsky.
In 1918, after the murder in Petrograd of Uritsky,
according to the resolution of the Petrograd Cheka, 500 innocent people, taken
by the new authorities as hostages, were shot in one night. Among them,
84-year-old military priest Father Alexy Stavrovsky was arrested. During his
imprisonment, he retained an amazing cheerfulness of spirit, consoled his
companions in bonds, and even communed with them with spare Holy Gifts. Soon
the prisoners were taken out of prison, built in a row, and they were told that
in the form of reprisals for the murder of Uritsky, one in ten of them would be
shot, and the rest were released. Father Alexy stood ninth, and after him - the
tenth - there was a young priest. Turning to him, Father Alexis said: "I
am already old, I do not have much time to live; in my life I have received
everything that was possible; my wife is an old woman, my children are all on
their feet; go yourself with God, but I will be in your place. " And,
having said this, he took the place of the young priest.
