Q: What is a kiosk?

A: The word Kiosk is derived from the Persian word kushk, meaning a small portico. More often than not a kiosk either refers to a small enclosure that sells newspapers, magazines, etc. or a roofed, three-sided placard in which news or information can be posted. However, in a religious context, a kiosk (or kiot) is usually a freestanding structure that displays or "houses" a special icon or item of reverence (such as a relic of some kind). They are usually made of wood, carved with designs, and have hooks for lampadas to hang in front of them or places to put candles.
