“Professing to be wise, they became fools.” (Romans 1:22)
“Professing to be wise, they became fools.” (Romans 1:22)
King David wrote that a fool says in his heart, “There is no God” (Psalm 14:1). Thus, St. Paul intimates that all fools have something in common: they believe themselves to be wise; creatures thinking they know better than the Creator. Such a belief not only has a profound effect on how we understand our relationship to God, but simply leads to more foolish thoughts and behaviors.
Thinking we know best (or better), creates a downward spiral, causing us to fall further away from God, through which humanity naturally descends into unrighteousness. This leads to rejecting God as our King, our Lord, our Provider, our Savior, and the One Who is truly to be worshipped. And trying to dismiss or live without God as our Sovereign King can only lead to utter disaster: disaster to our life, our soul, our morals, and even to this world.
Fr. John
