“Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.” (1st Cor. 10:14)

When we think of idols and idolatry, we often picture pagans bowing down to stone images and false gods. However, anything that replaces, separates, or draws our attention from the One, True God is an idol. Therefore, idolatry extends far beyond the confines of worship.

Modern idols are many and varied; driven by passion. Things the heart desires that is not of God is idolatry: pride, self-centeredness, greed, gluttony, and love of possessions. Also, that which takes up our time – time away from God – and that which we are passionate about can become an idol: sports, politics, movies, cars, clothing, collectables, overindulgence in hobbies – all can be a form of idolatry.

Fr. John
