Lack of joy means lack of God, while joy is proof of His presence.
If someone is a worldly person and delights in what is fleeting, rejoicing in pleasures, in the transient and vain things, such a person may have some enjoyment, some satisfaction, but in reality, if one pays attention, one will see that there is sorrow and distress in his life, as the Holy Scripture says: ‘Tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that does evil.’
It is impossible for joy to exist where there is transgression of God’s commandment, just as it is impossible for sorrow to exist when one lives according to the law of God.
