From the archives, a photo of the Father Athanasios Kantopoulos in March 1899 at the temporary Greek Orthodox Church situated in Gipps Street, East Melbourne. Father Kantopoulos was sent to Melbourne in 1898 by the Patriarch of Jerusalem, after many written and in-person requests by then orthodox community of Melbourne, to serve the greater orthodox community at the time (roughly 200 people, mostly Greeks but also Syrians and other nationalities) on a permanent basis.
