“…He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness being
tempted for forty days by the devil.” (Luke 4:1-2)
After His baptism, Christ retreated into the desert to
pray, fast, and prepare for His ministry. While there, He was tempted by Satan,
but remained vigilant; providing for an interesting theological paradox: Adam fell prey to the Evil One’s temptations
and was cast out of paradise and into a barren landscape, while Christ – the
New Adam – overcame temptation in order to bring us from a barren wilderness
back into paradise.
