Christ is Born!
Although the Three Wise Men or “Magi” are fleetingly mentioned in Matthew’s gospel, not much else is known about them from a historical perspective. Thus, many legends, myths, traditions, and folklore have arisen in place of fact.
Yet the one thing remains: these learned men came to be guided by a star to the Christ. Just from this premise alone, we can assume that they were not ordinary men. They were persons willing to challenge themselves, to look for a deeper meaning to their lives and the world they lived in. And becoming so completely absorbed by their pursuit that they had no hesitation in leaving the safety, comfort, and wealth of their homes, enlightened only by a distant star’s hope, and taking them upon a long, arduous, dangerous journey.
Their journey can be seen as a well-fitting metaphor of the interior journey each of us faces to overcome our limitations and become better persons. The Wise Men, following the light of that distant star, let nothing interfere with their quest. They fixed themselves upon a light, and ended up reflecting that light as they discovered the Way, the Truth, and the Light Itself!
May we emulate their courage and resolve in our own life’s journey and may we shine brightly upon this great and holy day – reflecting the Light and Love of the New Born King!
Christ is Born!
Fr. John
