Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell:
Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell:
This weekend our country celebrates the 250th anniversary of its founding. That is a long way from Paul’s Revere’s ride, Washington crossing the Delaware, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. However, there is a much longer time span since the creation of…well, Creation.
As we know, the history of “history” has always been an epic clash between life and death, good and evil, sin and righteousness, truth and falsehood, enslavement, and freedom. It is a constant battle between the forces that desire to enhance our life and those that seek to diminish or even destroy it; a contentious, unceasing spiritual struggle in which we either ferociously fight, or simply give up, give in, and surrender.
Today’s miracle in which our Lord heals two demon-possessed men, is a wondrous reminder that Christ is on our side against the forces of evil; like the well-timed arrival of a cavalry triumphally charging to rescue us, offering much-needed support, resources, and reinsurance – even amidst the direst of situations. Christ liberates us from bondage to sin, from the legions of evil and minions of darkness which plagues our world, conquering all by the power of His precious and life-giving Cross: a true weapon of love and peace.
Fr. John
