Today we commemorate the Holy Prophet Nahum.
Today we commemorate the Holy Prophet Nahum. His name in Hebrew means “comfort” or “consolation,” and his poem-like prophecy was a message of comfort amidst suffering, a word of hope in a time of darkness and evil, and a message of good will that all is not lost. In essence, it reminded the Hebrews that God maintains final control.
It does us good to be reminded from time to time, that God is still God. That He has the final word on pain, injustice, abuse, and unfairness. For when we think evil and wicked people win while good and decent people are punished, it is best to not complete the scorecard until the final whistle of the game blows. At that point God will make the correct judgment call. The wicked will be punished and the righteous will be rewarded. That knowledge, in itself, gives us comfort and solace.
Fr. John
