God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble to endure. This might not seem logical if you read heroic stories and fairy tales about great conquerors or are told, “When times get tough, the tough keep going.” Yet Scripture stresses otherwise: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5). Thus, it follows that humility will help one endure every affliction, whether poverty, poor health, or other trials. In a sense, humility provides a certain inner strength.
