Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell:
The parable of the Good Samaritan is one of our Lord’s
most well-known and beloved stories. It stands as a constant reminder for us to
extend ourselves and help those in need instead of simply passing by and
ignoring the situation. However, when missionaries traveled to Africa and
taught this parable to the Tanzanians, they found that the people there
understood the parable from a completely different viewpoint. To them, the
moral of the story was that God sends help in surprising and unexpected ways.
In other words, they didn’t focus upon the passers-by who, except for the
Samaritan, offered help, but related to and identified with the man who was
beaten, left for dead in a ditch, and how God sent someone to save him in his
time of need. Thus, the Tanzanians’ perspective sheds a whole new light and
dimension upon an age-old story.
Fr. John
