“Behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves.” (Luke 10:3)
Sheep are gentle, meek, and reflect the character of love. They generally follow and “obey” the shepherd. In turn, the shepherd keeps watch over them and protects them. Wolves, on the other hand, are predatory and cunning. They seek to devour the sheep. Thus, this imagery was not lost upon a culture that intimately understood shepherding ways.
By telling His “lambs” that He was sending them out into what might inevitably be fierce resistance and danger, Christ demolished any idealistic notion of what His servants might have envisioned as missionaries and evangelists.
Fr. John
