Imperial Sakkos - The Emperor's Robe
Imperial Sakkos - The Emperor's Robe
When Sultan Mehmet gave Patriarch Gennadios the Rum Miliyet priviliges, he also bestowed upon him all the roman imperial insignia. That's why orthodox bishops are dressed the way they are dressed today. The sakkos was the only thing that only the Emperor could wear.
1) Fresco of Emperor Andronikos II Paleologos from Monastery of Prodromos at Serres, Greece.
2) The Sakkos of Archbishop of Melenikou Ioannes, dated 1745-1753, now at Museum of Byzantine Civilisation at Thessalonike, Greece.
