Wisdom Literature
The Old and New Testament contain a rich and diverse collection of Books that encompass a wide range of themes, perspectives, and genres. Among these ancient texts are five specific books known as “Wisdom Literature,” which offer valuable insights, reflections, and practical advice on how to live a meaningful, godly, virtuous life. They are: The Book of Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, the Song of Solomon (or “Song of Songs”), and the Prophecy of Job.
Jews and Christians have cherished these books for their timeless wisdom and enduring relevance to readers of all ages. They deal with the way the world “works,” cover lofty philosophical issues regarding good and evil, and offer simple practical tips and common sense.
During Great lent, the Book of Proverbs becomes part of our daily regimen of readings, while we read Book of Job during Holy Week. Our reading of the Psalter also increases during this time, as we read it in its entirety twice during the week as opposed to just once each week outside of Great Fast.
