"Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come - and the books, especially the parchments." (2nd Timothy 4:13)

While Paul was in prison, he asked Timothy to bring his cloak and two other items in the possession of Carpus: scrolls and parchments. The scrolls were undoubtedly Old Testament Books, and the parchments were flat, book-like materials, used for writing. These may have already contained Paul’s writings, or perhaps they were blank parchments he needed for writing new materials. Thus, even during imprisonment, and facing the end of his own life, Paul is still emphasizing the importance of reading and studying the Word of God.

Fr. John
