“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)
Many of the adages recorded in the Book of Proverbs warn against the sin of pride, as it is dangerous in a myriad of ways, often leading to one’s downfall and humiliation. The pride referred to in these verses suggests an arrogance that manifests itself with independence from God and contrasts strikingly with humility. Therefore, while pride sets us on an ill-fated course [away from God], its antithesis, humility, leads us towards God, honor, righteousness, and His Heavenly Kingdom!
Fr. John
