One of the first foreign films I ever saw was Federico Fellini’s 1954 classic, “La Strada.” And within that movie the protagonist, a young woman, feels that she serves no purpose in life. Another circus performer, however, reminds her that God created everything for a purpose. “Even a pebble,” he says, “has a purpose. Because if this pebble doesn’t have a purpose, then nothing has a purpose.”
In today’s gospel lesson, when the people begin proclaiming Jesus as their King, the pharisees demand that our Lord rebuke them, and make them stop. But Jesus answers them saying, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out” (Luke 19:40)
This was no mere allegory, but a prophecy that would come to fruition; because when all of Christ’s followers abandoned Him, renounced Him, or were afraid to speak out in His defense, at His crucifixion it says that the stones all around split and cracked (Matt. 27:51). Thus, when man failed to cry out and do the right thing, the rest of God’s creation took up the cause, offering testimony for their Creator.
Fr. John
