“That He might touch them…” (Luke 18:15)
Since the rise of COVID touching has become somewhat taboo. We tend to maintain social distance, avoiding contact. Yet in doing so we lose a valuable human trait: that of touch.
Touching, caressing, hugging, and other physical gestures are loaded with meaning and purpose. They immediately express connection, affection, and help communicate emotions. Touching produces feelings that reduce anxiety and stress, while at the same time promotes growth and development, love, and well-being. Human touch is vital to our physical, emotional, and spiritual health.
Perhaps this is why our Lord blessed and healed so many through this most basic contact, and why He went out of His way to touch those who were deemed “untouchable.” Beggars, sinners, prostitutes, tax collectors, demoniacs, soldiers – not to mention the lame, handicapped, lepers, and degenerates all enjoyed Christ’s touch; uplifting them, healing them, and restoring them to the family of human beings.
Fr. John
