“And they stoned Stephen…” (Acts 6:59)
Stoning was a prescribed Old Testament punishment, a form of execution, by which a group of people would throw stones at a condemned person until they succumbed to their wounds. Because stoning was such a horrible, painful, drawn-out method of putting someone to death, it must have been a strong deterrent to the sins which led to it, namely murder, idolatry, adultery, and blasphemy.
