Great Lent is a perfect time to read both religious books and classic literature. The purpose of this reading is not only to increase our knowledge about religion, but to purify our minds from all that which usually fills it. It is simply incredible how crowded one’s mind becomes with all the cares, interests, anxieties, and impressions, and how little control we have over them. Reading such edifying material helps to concentrate our attention on something entirely different from the usual contents of our thinking, creating an alternative mental and spiritual atmosphere.
