“And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.” (Matthew 5:41)
In first-century Judea, Roman soldiers could legally compel any Jewish citizen to carry their heavy armor, equipment, or belongings for up to a mile. This “perk” to the average foot soldier was intended to degrade their captives, forcibly demonstrate Roman rule, as well as being an act of oppression; keeping the population under thumb. Obviously, the Jewish population deeply resented this practice.
Jesus, however, came up with a radical and counter-cultural solution: If a soldier compels you to go a mile, go two!
Our Lord was not telling His followers to passively accept Roman abuse or oppression, but to respond with unexpected generosity; going beyond the minimum required by law. Thus, “going the extra mile” becomes a metaphor of love, honor, freedom, and empowerment towards one’s enemies and those who mistreat you; overcoming evil with goodness and transforming mere obligation into an opportunity of willing service and national pride.
Fr. John
