“Be hospitable to one another…” (1 Peter 4:9)
Hospitality is an important element of the Christian Faith and its ministry, in fact, it may even be considered one of its “hallmarks.” Jesus not only made the care and concern for strangers a priority and an important tenet of His teachings, but our Lord and His disciples often depended upon such hospitality during His ministry as they traveled from town to town themselves.
The Greek word for hospitality literally means “love of strangers,” which is both commanded and commended throughout Scripture as a highly regarded virtue. Thus, by showing mercy, compassion, and hospitality in serving others – especially strangers and the poor - we serve and honor Christ.
Fr. John
