During the first millennium of the Christian Church, much of the world’s populace was illiterate. Therefore, icons and iconography functioned as “books” for the people – portraying scriptural accounts of Christ’s life, His miracles, teachings, parables…as well as the saints of the Church. Thus, essentially, icons served  to depict theology and the gospels “in color.”
